To use connectives and synonyms in the context of fair trade.

Learning Outcome
Children have viewed a series of photographs about Chinangwa Village in Malawi and completed a work sheet using connectives and synonyms.

Have the picture of the crocodile (image 1 on the attached PowerPoint) on the board as the children come in.

Ask the children to think of some things that they use water for (washing themselves, cooking, drinking, cleaning). Ask them where they get the water from (the tap or perhaps they buy bottled water). Ask the children to close their eyes and imagine that the only water they could get was from a dirty river that had crocodiles living in it. How would that make them feel? (Frightened? They may also feel thirsty or dirty as they wouldn’t want to go in etc).

Explain that, until recently, the inhabitants of Chinangwa Village in Malawi (Africa) had to get all of their water from a dirty, crocodile infested river. Sometimes the dirty water made people sick and sometimes the crocodiles even attacked them.

Most of the villagers in Chinangwa village work as sugar farmers (image 2 on PowerPoint). Recently, the sugar farmers were able to start selling their sugar as “Fairtrade” sugar. What does this mean? Explain that it means that their sugar could have the Fairtrade Mark on the packaging (image 3 on PowerPoint) and it also means that all the sugar farmers were paid fairly for their work. Have the children seen the Fairtrade Mark before? What do you think the sugar farmers spent their extra money from Fairtrade on?

Show the picture of the water pump (image 4 on PowerPoint). How do you think this made their lives better? (No danger from crocodile, could wash and drink and cook, didn’t get ill from dirty water).

Ask the children to complete the worksheet. (The worksheet is in editable format in case you need to adapt it for higher/lower abilities).

What did the children learn? Can they think of anything they could do to help other famers who might be in similar situations?
