The class looks at the information about Craft Aid and discusses why the organisation employs people with differences and disabilities. Does this surprise the class? Do they think Craft Aid will have had to adapt at all? Discuss with the class reasons why people with disabilities are sometimes treated differently. An important aspect of Fairtrade is to treat everyone the same, and make sure that everyone has the same opportunities, regardless of any disadvantages. Some developing nations, although they have assented to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights still do not have the adequate health infrastructure or facilities to support people with disabilities. This is compounded by cultural beliefs and social attitudes which are often negative. For example, some African folk lore believes that disabilities are associated with the supernatural and are caused by God’s anger at parents for wrongdoing or breaking a taboo, or that a curse has been placed on the family. Attitudes such as these lead to isolation and segregation from areas of society.
Fairtrade is important not only because it promotes fair prices for producers, but also because it promotes fair treatment.
In groups, pupils generate 10 golden rules of how to treat people and draw links between them and Fairtrade.
Decide together on a class set of 10 golden rules and display them. Pupils may also want to try to persuade the rest of the school to sign up to their 10 golden rules by giving assemblies and meeting with the headteacher. Alternatively, you may choose to invite a representative from a charity or organisation to talk to the class about different ways individual pupils can get involved in their work.
