4 - Fairtrade Families
In this lesson the children play a version of 'Happy Families' while learning about some Fairtrade producer groups.

The children have completed the game of 'Fairtrade Families' and collected one set of producers each.

Present students with the list of countries they’re studying in the unit and a blank map of the world and ask them to identify where they are on the map (either the correct continent or specific place). Do the same with the countries the commodities are grown in.
Check the class’s understanding of Fairtrade, including the Fairtrade premium and benefits to producer groups' local communities.
Ask how many of the children have played the card game Happy Families. Explain that the class is going to create their own set of 'Fairtrade Families' based around 7 producer groups. There are 36 producer stories. Give each pupil one story and explain that they have responsibility to make the card for their producer. Use the template below or ask children to ensure they include the same information. For those who finish early, distribute another story.
When completed, keep the cards for the class to use.
The object of the game is to collect complete producer groups. The player whose turn it is asks another player for a specific card from the same producer group. If the player has the card, he gives it to the requester and the requester can then ask any player for another card. If the player does not have the card, it becomes his turn and he asks another player for a specific card. Play continues in this way until all the producer groups are reunited. The player with the most cards wins. Remember that the number of people in each producer group will vary!
Use a washing line in the classroom to peg up examples of the different ways in which farmers have benefited from Fairtrade. Ask the class to decide on which are the most important and put them in order.
